Alberta Thompson will always be remembered internationally by the world's marine conservation community for her courageous stand in defense of the California Gray Whale. She was a woman of wisdom, of insight and compassion. As a Makah Elder in her Seventies, she attended the International Whaling Commission Meeting in Monaco and traveled to Australia to share her love for the whales with the Aboriginal communities. She was not afraid to speak her mind and to fight for what she saw as a noble cause. I am proud that I knew her and that we had her counsel. She had a beautiful heart and the world is a lesser place without her.
