Port Angeles

Obituary

Mike Stenger took his last flight on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at his home in Port Angeles with his wife and daughter by his side.

He was born January 23, 1940, in Pasadena, California. He was 77.

After graduation from high school in Long Beach, California, in 1957, he enlisted in the Coast Guard. After boot camp, electronics school and his duty station at Miyakojima, Japan, he took the entrance exam to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He received his appointment in 1960.

Commissioned an ensign in 1964, he spent time on two buoy tenders in Sitka, Alaska. Receiving his wings in 1967, he served at Coast Guard air stations in San Diego, California; Corpus Christi, Texas; Kodiak, Alaska; and Humboldt Bay, California.

Capt. Stenger served as chief of boating safety at headquarters, Washington, D.C., and chief of search and rescue in Juneau, Alaska. He served as commanding officer of both Humboldt Baya and Port Angeles. He retired in Port Angeles in 1992.

Mike's life was characterized by his Coast Guard career, his deep concern for people, his profound love for his family and a sincere and abiding faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ. Despite the ravaging disease that invaded his body, that faith never wavered. He will be remembered fondly as an outgoing, compassionate, sincere, genuine person of the highest ethical standards.

He was a member of Independent Bible Church and the Peninsula Men's Gospel Singers.

Capt. Stenger is survived by Shirley, his wife of nearly 44 years; his daughter, Kathleen Stenger; son-in-law John DeBiase; granddaughter Natalie Stenger of Seattle, Washington; and his brother, Barron Stenger of Irvine, California.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Bruce Stenger.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at Independent Bible Church, 116 East Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Donations (in lieu of flowers) may be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 East Eighth Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362; or Independent Bible Church.
