Ann Travers
Butler
Jun 19, 1941 — Feb 6, 2022
Port Angeles
Ann Travers Butler, an extraordinary and amazing human being, passed away on February 6, 2022, at her home in Port Angeles, Washington. She was 80.
Ann was born on June 19, 1941, the second of four children, and daughter of Charles and Carol Travers. She moved frequently as a child and developed a passion for many activities including playing violin, piano, acrobatics, ballet, ballroom dancing, swimming, horseback riding, sailing, and especially softball. A studious learner, her parents always found her on the honor roll.
At 15, Ann attended prep school at Abbot Academy where she was president of her class. It was here where she met her best friend Cynny Nichols, who married Ann's brother John and cemented their 65-year friendship. Ann then attended Connecticut College and met her husband Jim Butler, a cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy. They lived the nomadic -but fun- life as a career military family.
The Coast Guard transferred Jim and Ann to live in 16 different locations throughout the United States during their fifty-year marriage. Their firstborn Beth debuted in Pensacola, Florida, and they later welcomed their other children, Scott and Mary. When living in Mobile, Alabama, Ann received her BS in Psychology, and while living in Annapolis, Maryland began her long career as a well-respected paralegal, specializing in the areas of bankruptcy law, estate, trust, and probate.
When the time came for retirement in 1988, Jim and Ann chose to return to the area nearest to their heart: Port Angeles. Together, they explored the world, taking a "trip of a lifetime" every six months and served the community in a myriad of ways.
Ann served as a board member of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, enjoyed her sisterhood with her local PEO, was a greeter for St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and volunteered at the Feiro Marine Life Center.
Ann was an avid hiker and was a part of the "Llama Ladies" group who hiked together for 15 years, covering over 300 miles in the Olympic National Park, the Dolomites in Italy, heli-hiking in British Columbia, and covering trails on the eastern slopes of the Cascades.
Ann loved many things: spending time with her five wonderful grandchildren, participating in her book club, attending the theater and opera with friends, practicing yoga, screaming down roller coasters, and dabbling in the art of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging).
Ann is remembered for her bright smile, quick wit, loving personality, grace, and zest for life. She was a treasured and loyal friend to many.
She is survived by her son Scott (Rhonda), daughter Mary (Michael), five grandchildren (Ashley, Andy, Ryan, Nathan, and Caroline), brother Richard Travers, sister Mary Munger, and is preceded in death by her daughter Beth, husband Jim, and brother John Travers.
A memorial service is planned for a later date at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Port Angeles Fine Arts Center (

), St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (

), or PEO Foundation (checks payable to PEO Foundation, and mailed to 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312, in memory of Ann Butler, Chapter FM, Port Angeles, WA).
Drennan & Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles was entrusted with her arrangements. Please sign the online guestbook for her family at www.drennanford.com .
