Calvin Norman
Mogck
Sep 3, 1929 — Dec 30, 2020
Port Angeles
Cal Mogck was born on Sept. 3rd, 1929 in a small farmhouse outside of Kulm, North Dakota to Maggie and Fred Mogck. He made the final journey home into his Lord's arms on Dec. 30th, 2020.
He grew up working hard on the farm with his 4 siblings after having lost his father at the age of 2. The depression and severe droughts of his early years brought much hardship, but he recalled the love and laughter of his family throughout. Cal has always been thankful and proud of the solid foundation of values given him in Klum (school, church, family friends).
Sports were a big part of his life, as was music. He earned honors in basketball and baseball and went on to teach and coach before going into the Army in 1951. He met the love of his life, Lu Engeness in 1950 and they were married on a weekend pass in Washington, DC.
Their first daughter, Mimi, was born in 1953 at an Army base in California. The next few years took them all over the United States as Cal attended flight school and was then sent to Korea to fly both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. He was discharged and then continued flying helicopters commercially. Stacie, his second daughter was born in August of 1957.
In the coming years, Cal would work for Standard Oil in their Marketing Division moving all around the Western United States and ending up in Chicago.
In 1973, Cal and Lu's desire to move back west caused them to leave Standard Oil and purchase a Western Auto store in Port Angeles. During the next 10 years, Cal and Lu worked side by side. He would fret on each Christmas Eve if any layaway items were still on the shelves, especially toys and bikes! He wouldn't go home until each family was contacted and if need be, gifts delivered on credit. Following his sale of the store, Cal joined First Federal Savings and Loan as Assistant Vice President in Property Management, retiring in 1993.
In each of the 13 states Cal and Lu lived in, they established strong friendships and church connections. He loved the great outdoors, and while raising his daughters, could be found every weekend with them on water skis, motorcycles, or the ski slopes.
Cal believed in giving back to the community and participated in Kiwanis for 47 years, United Way, served meals at Salvation Army, volunteered at the Port Angeles Visitor's Center every Saturday for 20+ years, held leadership roles in their churches (Holy Trinity Lutheran and Dungeness Valley Lutheran) and was selected as a Port Angeles Citizen of the Year.
His big smile was on constant display, as was his all-encompassing love for life, God, and every member of his immediate and extended family. To a person, this was said of even a brief encounter with Cal: "He made you feel as if you were the only and most important person in the room." There was no one like him, and he will be greatly missed.
Cal is survived by his wife of 69 years Lu Mogck, Daughters Mimi (Bill)Tiderman of Port Angeles, Stacie Latimer of Burien,WA, grandchildren Bret (Kevin) Tiderman of Seattle, Dan (Nikki) Tiderman, of Beaverton, OR, Kala Latimer and Liam Latimer, of Seattle, and niece Cindy (John) Mayes of Greshem, OR along with extended family in North Dakota, South Dakota and Utah.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for late spring or summer.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peninsula Friends of the Animals or the Peninsula Home Fund.
Drennan & Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles is entrusted with his arrangements. Please sign the online guestbook for his family at www.drennanford.com .
