Port Angeles

Obituary

Duane passed away in Port Angeles, Washington at the age of 92.

Born in 1931 in Wyoming, the eldest of four boys, Duane's early life was influenced by the great depression. As a youngster, Duane remembers the Wyoming National Guard Mounted Cavalry Unit's daily gallop down the old dirt road fronting the family home. In 1941 the family packed into a 2-door, model A Ford and drove to Washington state. Income was earned by gathering and selling blueberries and sword ferns. The four brothers supplemented the family income by peeling and selling Cascara bark.  They eventually bought a farm in Port Orchard, where Duane finished high school.  Duane participated in football, boxing and track events. Duane graduated in 1949 and by the next month had joined the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas.

Duane was provided electronics and communications training through the Air Force.  During his years of military service, his family moved to Alaska and built a homestead in Big Lake.  After four years in the Air Force, including a three-year tour of Japan during the Korean War, Duane followed his family to Alaska. Just after statehood, Duane moved to Juneau, where he met and married Eloise DeLand and raised two children. During the next 50 years he was employed by IBM as a Customer Engineer and as a Computer/Data Communication Specialist for the State of Alaska.

Duane embraced the Alaskan wilderness and had many hunting and fishing adventures. His children accompanied him on many hiking, boating and berry picking trips. Duane and Eloise spent many winter breaks in Hawaii, enjoying all the islands, but especially Maui. Many years of square dancing were enjoyed as well as visiting with his five grandchildren as much as possible. Upon retirement, Duane and Eloise enjoyed traveling throughout Canada and the Southwest. Trips to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Britain and many trips up and down the Alaska Highway were enjoyed in retirement. Duane and Eloise relocated to the Olympic Peninsula for the remainder of their years.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Gerald Herrick; his wife, Eloise "Gina" Herrick;  brothers Jim Herrick, Ron Herrick, Richard Herrick and nephews Allen Herrick and Michael DeLand. Duane is survived by children Frank (Jean) Herrick and Laurel White; grandchildren Phillip (Inga) White, Nicholas White, Calvin Herrick, Benjamin Herrick and Elizabeth (Nolan) Williams; great-grandchildren Ivy White and Ivar White; nieces Kathryn (Richard) Hanway, Irene (Feleti) Tupou, Marlene DeLand and Debbie Herrick; nephews Stanley DeLand, Donny (Vesta) Herrick and Dale Herrick.

At Duane's request, there will be no service. Duane's ashes will be spread in Maui, to be united with the ashes of his wife, Eloise. Condolences may be sent to his daughter, Laurel White, p.o. box 210231 Auke Bay, Alaska 99821 or to his son, Frank Herrick, p.o. box 175 Wallingford, Iowa 51365.
