Encarnacion Domingo
Abuan
Sep 2, 1931 — Dec 26, 2020
Port Angeles
Encarnacion "Cion" Domingo Abuan, 89, of Port Angeles, Washington, fell asleep in death peacefully in the early morning hours of December 26, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.
Encarnacion "Cion" Menor Domingo was born on September 2, 1931, in Kohala, the Big Island of Hawaii to Ancelmo and Apolonia Domingo. She was third born in a family of seven children, Rosa, Marcelina, Carolina, Petronilia, Rosalinda and Rome.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Aureliano "Abby," their infant daughter Annette, daughter Raylene Long and son-in-law Robert Bird. She leaves behind daughters Laurinda (Wallace) Van Dusen of Malawi, Africa; Tonia Bird of Port Angeles, Washington; Alisa (Lloyd) Van Dusen of Port Angeles, Washington; son Aurel (Rebecca) Abuan of Tacoma, Washington; grandson Jalen (Kysa) Abuan of Tacoma, Washington; son-in-law David Long of Bamako, Mali, West Africa; and sister Rosalinda Cabral of Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as many relatives in California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington State.
Cion attended the local grade school in Kohala, Hawaii. As a child, she loved reading books and playing the piano. In the tenth grade, she began working in her Uncle's general store. Following her graduation in 1949 from Kohala High School, she moved to Oahu to attend the University of Hawaii majoring in Business Education, English and Shorthand to become a teacher. In 1953, she graduated from the University of Hawaii and interned at Farrington High School and Waipahu High School before moving back to the Big Island to teach courses in business at her Alma Mater Kohala High. At 26 years of age, she traveled to and across the mainland. She settled down in San Francisco, California, where she worked at a travel agency.
There in San Francisco, in July 1960, she met handsome Aureliano "Abby" Abuan, who served in the Coast Guard and was stationed on Treasure Island. On November 26, 1960, they were married in Reno, Nevada. They were married 37 years.
While stationed in Alameda, daughters Raylene Grace and Laurinda Marie were born in San Francisco, California. Twin daughters Tonia Lee and Alisa Jean were born in nearby Oakland. After being transferred to Port Angeles, Washington, son Aurel Domingo was born.
When Abby was shipped out and at sea for months at a time in the 1960s and early 1970s, Cion lovingly cared for their five children. Being a Coast Guard wife, the children remember when Abby had overnight duty at the Coast Guard Airstation, she would make a home cooked meal and take it to him so the young family could eat a meal together.
On July 3, 1976, Cion was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in Seattle, Washington. From then on she led a life based on Bible principles, living for her God, Jehovah. Weekly congregation meetings and door to door preaching, as Jehovah's Witnesses are known for, were cherished privileges both for her and her family. She loved sharing the hope found in the Bible as often as she could. Twice a year, for many years she would expand her time in the ministry to 30-60 hours a month. As part of the West Port Angeles Congregation, she was deeply loved and known for her generous and hospitable spirit. Through the years, it was common for the Abuan family house to be filled with friends and relatives, whether for Bible studies or social gatherings that included singing, dancing and games. Cion loved to cook and host family, friends and even newly made acquaintances from all over the world. Her dining table was often spread with Filipino food, international dishes and desserts, always enough to feed more than had come. Years later many friends would remind her of the meals they had eaten at her home.
As attentive parents of five growing children, they kept busy by going to the public library, piano lessons, the symphony, hula dance lessons, having a newspaper route and learning musical instruments. Highlights for the family were trips to conventions, Hawaii, California, camping trips across the country to visit National Parks as well as the World Headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses in New York. They encouraged their children to travel on their own, as they had, which led them to the Philippines, Poland, South America, Mexico and across Canada. Starting in 1989 over a span of 18 months, Abby and Cion survived five weddings. The family grew in size, and together, Abby and Cion found deep satisfaction in having raised their children to love and serve Jehovah along with them. In 1993, Jalen, the only grandchild, was born, their pride and joy. In 1997, her precious Abby passed away. Although two daughters were living in Africa as missionaries, Cion remained close to her children and talked with all of them as often as she could, even mastering digital devices so that she could keep in touch with them. In recent years as she was cared for by her children, she loved being with friends in the congregation, finding a new love of arts and crafts and continuing to be a diligent student of the Bible.
Cion had unwavering faith in the Bible's promise of a paradise "new earth" soon to come. (2 Peter 3:13) This hope sustained her throughout her life, confident that Jehovah was "grasping her right hand." (Isaiah 41:13) Her eyes always focused on the near future of a world without sickness, pain or death. There she would experience the happiness of seeing her loved ones again, including those resurrected back to life-all with the hope of enjoying perfect life, forever.
