Evelyn Mae Schilke Estes Person, born on August 6, 1929, was the beloved only daughter of
William and Ester Schilke and the middle child of five siblings. She lived a life filled with love,
strength, and faith, always putting her family and others first. Evelyn's journey began in North
Dakota, where she spent her early years before her family moved to Port Angeles, Washington,
when she was a young girl.
On November 25, 1948, Evelyn married James Estes, and together they welcomed three
children: Arthur, Sherman, and Andrew. After the passing of her first husband on September 5
1970, Evelyn's resilience shown through. She lived a life defined by her strong will and
unwavering faith, despite enduring many trials, including being injured in a gas explosion at
Haguewoods's Restaurant in Port Angeles on September 30, 1971.
Evelyn met and fell in love with Emil Person and they wed on February 8, 1975. Together, they
expanded their family with their son, Steven. Their love and devotion to one another was evident
in the life they built together, particularly on their farm. When Emil passed away on February 22,
2019, Evelyn faced another heartbreaking loss. Her son Andy was there to help her navigate the
challenges of life on the farm, offering his support during such a difficult time. Despite the
hardships she faced, Evelyn's spirit remained unbroken, and she carried on with grace.
For the last 3 ½ years of her life, Evelyn lived with her son Sherman, sharing her wisdom, love,
and warmth while surrounded by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great
grandchildren. She often reflected on her life's journey, offering guidance and support to those
around her. Evelyn was also deeply bonded with her dear friend Donna Keys, who was like a
daughter to her. Their close friendship provided a source of comfort and strength through many
seasons of life.
Throughout the years, Evelyn opened her heart and home to countless foster children, providing
them with love, guidance, and support. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she gave freely to
those in need without hesitation. She was a devoted member of her church, actively participating
in Bible study and leading summer Bible camps for children. Her unshakable faith was the
cornerstone of her life, guiding her through every challenge she faced.
Evelyn is survived by her four sons, Art (Janet), Sherman (Veralee), Andy (Jolly), Steven, as
well as eight grandchildren (one of whom has preceded her in death), 12 great-grandchildren,
and three great-great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. She is also survived by two
sisters-in-law, Ann Schilke and Luella Rykowski, and many nieces and nephews that she loved
so very much. Her legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering strength lives on through her
family. Those who knew her can attest to her incredible strength, especially in her faith. She will
be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, 45 Monroe Rd. in Port Angeles. Arrangements were entrusted to Drennan & Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles. Please sign the online guestbook for her family at www.drennanford.com .
