Obituary

Jack E. "Shaky" Hart, passed away on February 9, 2022, of complications from a surgery. He was born November 15, 1941, to Bud and Betty Hart, a Port Angeles pioneer family. Jack attended Lincoln Elementary and Crescent School before graduating from Port Angeles High School in 1960.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he spent time in the Hawaiian Islands as well as in local waters on the Fir, a Coast Guard buoy tender, and the Winnebago, a Coast Guard cutter. He was honorably discharged in 1966. He later joined the Merchant Marines and traveled around the world.

Not one to idly sit around, Jack always had a job. His work ethic was extraordinary. He spent many years in the logging industry in Southeast Alaska before purchasing his own logging truck.

He married Vicki Dodd of Alaska in 1980. Their son, William, was born and they settled in Port Angeles. Jack was employed by several different local companies throughout the years. In 1999, he began working for Bruch and Bruch as a truck driver until his retirement in 2014.

His hobby became woodcutting. He spent many hours with his dog, Lucas, cutting and splitting firewood for families in the Joyce and Port Angeles area.

The highlight of his life came in 2020 with the birth of his granddaughter, Solvi. She meant everything to him, and they shared many traits. Family and friends were of the utmost importance to Jack, and he will be deeply missed. His humor, love and zest for life will live on in our hearts forever.

Jack impacted the lives of many with his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand. He was honest, a good listener, and had a big friendly smile. He played Santa for family members for many years. He made a dramatic appearance clad in his suit and beard, bells ringing, and always left with a hearty "ho ho ho!"

Jack was very supportive of the Crescent School District sports teams as well as an avid fan and supporter of the Port Angeles Girls Softball program for many years. He employed local teenagers through his woodcutting operations where he taught them the value of hard work.

Playing the slots in Reno was a favorite pastime, and Jack always had a streak of luck during his stay. He spent time there with numerous friends and family. Jack loved to "Chase the Marlin!" He spent 25 years deep-sea fishing in Panama and Costa Rica. "Mr. Jack", as they called him, was loved by the Zancudo staff and was infamous for his rare albino sailfish that hangs in the lodge.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Will (Johanna); granddaughter, Solvi; sister, Janelle Gray (Mac); nephews Mitch Gray and Sean Gray; great niece and nephew, Brennan and Gavin Gray; special relative Diane Markley; stepdaughter, Sue Payton; and numerous cousins.

A heartfelt thank you to special friends Trent and Dara Peppard for their loving and tender care of Jack. A celebration of life will be held in May. Date and time to be determined. If you would like to make a donation in Jack's memory, it can be sent to:
