Obituary

Larry Speelman of Sequim, Washington passed away on November 10, 2022 at the age of 80 with his loving family by his side.

Larry was born to parents Kartha and Milford Speelman in Denver, Colorado. He enjoyed fishing, building models, playing high school basketball, and worked at the family service station through his high school years. His love of aviation led him to join the United States Air Force after high school graduation. Larry married Patricia McGuirk and had their son, Wayne, while stationed at James Connolly Air Force Base in Texas.

Larry spent many years at Edwards Air Force Base working on several test projects and earning his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. His time and experience at Edwards would launch his civilian career in aviation electronics after being honorably discharged.

Larry met Alice Vernon in the summer of 1968. They were married two years later in San Bernadino, California and had their son, Brian and daughter, Julie. Larry went on to earn his Master's Degree and work on career project including heads up displays for pilots in fighter jets, unmanned drones, navigational aviation electronics and global positioning satellite tracking technology.

His love of planes and fine scale modeling continued in his retirement as a member of the North Olympic Peninsula Modelers Society. He found great friendships in this group. They met weekly and hosted an annual modeling show and contest at Fort Warden in Port Townsend, Washington.

Larry also stayed sharp in retirement by training to be a Tax Aide volunteer to help people free of charge with their taxes and participating in a weekly investment club. He also loved taking his 56' Chevy to car shows and around town, working a mean sudoku puzzle and always had a spicy joke ready to go!

Larry is survived by his children Wayne, Brian and Julie; his sisters Patty and Ginny; and his granddaughter Amanda. He will be laid to rest next to Alice at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in Larry's name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation .
