Obituary

Laurine Drennan, 90, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026 in Bothell, WA surrounded by the goodness of God and the loving care of her family.

Born on October 12, 1935 in Seattle to Lawrence and Edythe Manley, Laurine was affectionately known to family and friends as, "Renie."
She was lovingly raised alongside her beloved sister Lee, first under the devoted care of her grandmother, Ora Manley, and later by her stepmother, Marguerite "Betty" Manley (née Groh). Looking back on her childhood, Laurine often said she felt "blessed to have two wonderful women" raise her.

Laurine and Lee shared a lifelong bond that remained one of the great joys of her life. She once wrote, "My sister Lee has been my best friend over the years. " Growing up, Laurine developed what became a lifelong love of nature, animals, music, and of course, family. She fondly remembered outings to rivers, lakes, and beaches, especially treasured time spent at the family's cabin on Lake Ames, near Carnation, WA. Laurine had a lifelong passion for music. She played piano from an early age, later adding ukulele and guitar. Laurine especially loved music from earlier generations (1920's-1970's), while Country and Southern Gospel became favorites in her later years.

Laurine graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1953 and attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

In March 1956, she married Charles Gerrodette, and together they welcomed two children, Stephen and Suzanne. Laurine embraced motherhood wholeheartedly. She loved being involved in her children's schools and activities, serving as a room mother, PTA volunteer, and a Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls leader. Reflecting on motherhood years later, Laurine wrote, "When you are a parent, you get to grow up again. I could see the world through a child's eyes — play games, be silly, and have new adventures. Everything is new and exciting."

Laurine also served as a docent for Woodland Park Zoo, where she was a guide and also brought animals into elementary school classrooms. Laurine also worked as a secretary in Seattle's Shoreline School District from 1973 to 1980 – it was a role she truly loved.
Life was not without its challenges. During a particularly difficult season, Laurine turned to God in a new and profound way. Looking back on her prayerful pleas during those times, she wrote, "The amazing thing was that God did help me! I learned to rely on Him. It sure makes life easier!"

In 1980, Port Angeles became Laurine's new home, Peninsula College her new employer, and First Christian her loving church family. Within a few years, she met Jim Drennan and the two were married in May 1985. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service to others. Laurine worked in Peninsula College's admin office until her retirement in 1995. She also played an important role in helping Jim realize his dream of opening Drennan & Ford Funeral Home and Crematory in 1990 with his longtime friend, Steve Ford.
Laurine enjoyed a rich and active life in Port Angeles. She participated behind-the-scenes in the Port Angeles Community Players, sang in the First Christian Church choir and volunteered in other church ministries, donated her time at Olympic Memorial Hospital, and joined other local groups like Kiwanis and the Klahanie Koi Club. She especially enjoyed gardening, music, theater, reading, dogs, and spending meaningful time with family, members of her church, and dear friends – several of whom were longtime neighbors. Perhaps nowhere was her heart more at peace than on the Oregon Coast, especially Lincoln City. "My lifelong love is the beach," she wrote. "The sound of the waves, the wind,
the sand, the birds... I never get tired of being at the beach." In fact, Laurine also spent many hours on Ediz Hook enjoying the view.

Life brought many joys to Laurine, but it also brought profound sorrow. In August 1996, she experienced every parent's worst nightmare with the loss of her beloved son, Stephen to leukemia. At the time of his death, Steve was the husband of Karen and father of young Kyle
and Rebecca. Though the loss of Steve remained with her for the rest of her life, Laurine leaned deeply into her faith. Reflecting on that difficult chapter years later, she wrote, "Faith in God's plan was the only way I could get through the loss of my son. Prayer is an important part of my
life." This is a quiet but powerful testimony to the steadfast faith that carried Laurine through life's greatest joys and deepest sorrows alike.

In her final years, Laurine journeyed through the challenges of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's Disease with the unwavering love and support of her family. Beginning in 2018, her daughter Suzanne devoted herself to caring for her mother full-time—first in Laurine's Port Angeles home and later, beginning in 2022, in the Seattle-area home Suzanne shared with her husband, Kevin, where they lovingly cared for Laurine together until her passing.

Throughout their years together, Laurine, Suzanne and Kevin enjoyed many fun adventures – including a 10-day/six state road trip to Sedona, Arizona and back, a weekend adventure to the Oregon Coast, overnight trips to weddings in Bellingham and Ellensburg, a seemingly endless variety of special events and family get-togethers, and too-many-to-count hair salon visits, shopping excursions, day trips and scenic drives. Laurine's final eight years, much like her entire life, were defined by family, music, laughter, resilience in spite of life's inevitable challenges, and an abundance of love.

Laurine is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Vander Weide, and son-in-law Kevin of Bothell, WA; daughter-in-law Karen Gerrodette of Bothell, WA; stepson Guy Drennan and wife Lizette of Vancouver, WA; stepdaughter DiAnna Hill and husband Bob of Port Angeles, WA; and sister Lee Berry and husband Jim of Issaquah, WA. She is also survived by grandchildren Kyle Gerrodette, Rebecca Gerrodette, Micael Prince, Carter Prince, Christian Vander Weide, David Drennan, Adriana Drennan, Deja Hill, and Marissa Sill; great-granddaughter Isabelle; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Gerrodette, great-nephew, Darian Neely, and her husband of 38 years, James "Jim" Drennan.
