Laveta Mae
Edmonson
May 16, 1926 — Jan 11, 2021
Seattle
LaVeta Edmonson died January 11, 2021 from natural causes at the age of 94. She was a resident at Bayview Life Plan Community in Seattle.
She was the first child of Arthur T and Maude A (Ely) Hurst and was born May 16, 1926 in Horton, Kansas. Her early years were spent in Brown County, KS and Buchanan County, MO. In 1942 she left Agency High School in her junior year and moved with her family to Seattle where she completed her high school degree at Queen Anne High School in 1944.
It was in Agency, Mo, where she first met Glen M Edmonson, a new teacher of business courses in local high schools, including hers. As he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and she and her family were moving to join her father who had gotten a job in the shipbuilding boom in Seattle, Glen and LaVeta agreed to write to each other. That correspondence eventually led to their marriage on February 14, 1945 in Seattle and 65 years together.
They made the Haller Lake district in the north end of Seattle their home for 30 years and raised their three children there. As her children entered school, she took on medical transcriptionist positions in the Seattle medical community. She also found time to start researching her family genealogy, a passion she pursued into her 80s.
In 1978, LaVeta and Glen retired and moved to a home they built west of Sequim, WA, where they enjoyed life on the Olympic Peninsula and LaVeta pursued her genealogy. She became an active member of the Clallam County Historical Society and the Clallam County Genealogy Society. After Glen's death in 2010, LaVeta moved into Fifth Avenue Senior Living in Sequim and in 2015 to an apartment at Ida Culver Ravenna in Seattle. After a fall injury in 2019 she moved into Bayview's Assisted Living on Queen Anne Hill (back in her first Seattle neighborhood).
LaVeta is survived by her two sons: M Bruce Edmonson (Kathleen Massoth) of Middleton, Wisconsin, and Richard C Edmonson of Seattle; and one grandson, Hal M Edmonson, currently in Providence, Rhode Island (recently engaged to Erin Plews-Ogan). LaVeta is also survived by her three nephews: Michael W Hurst, Christopher A Hurst, and Lon P Hurst and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Maude Hurst, her daughter, Cynthia Ann Edmonson, her brothers, Carroll Lee Hurst and William G Hurst, and her sister-in-law, Anna (Bogo) Hurst.
Due to the pandemic hazards and restrictions, a memorial service at this time is not possible, but the family hopes to hold one later in the year when we can gather in Port Angeles. If you'd like to be notified of a future service, please leave your contact information in LaVeta's obituary guest book at the Drennan & Ford Funeral Home website (Drennanford.com.)
Suggested memorials may be made to Friends of Rainier Inc. (School for the Developmentally Disabled in Buckley, WA where she visited Cindy at least monthly for 60 years) c/o F.O.R. PO Box 516, Medina , WA 98039, or The Clallam County Historical Society Building Fund, PO
Box 1327 Port Angeles, WA 98362, or a charity of your choice. Her genealogy collections will be contributed to various state genealogy societies where they will help other genealogy researchers.
LaVeta was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, caregiver, role model, advocate, and mentor to family, friends and co-workers on many levels. She was also an avid and careful family researcher who helped many of us follow the life trails of our ancestors. May she now be welcomed into the arms of God and reunited with all her loved ones. And may she finally meet all the ancestors she sought diligently to know.
The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, friends and relatives who helped LaVeta live her final decade in caring, safe and stimulating environments. We are especially appreciative of the wonderful staff who cared for her at Bayview in Assisted Living and in her final days in Skilled Nursing. We are deeply grateful.
Drennan & Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles was entrusted with her arrangements. Please sign the online guestbook for her family at www.drennanford.com .
