Obituary

Mary Downen Bonwell Johnson passed away November 7th, 2023 in Seattle WA with family by her side. Born in 1947 to Mildred and Rodney Downen, she was the youngest of 5 children. Mary was raised in Port Angeles, and after graduating high school she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education from Washington State University. After starting her career and family, she then worked on her Master of Science, Vocational/Technical Education during the summers and earned that degree in 1991. She taught at Curlew, Eatonville, Oroville, and Republic school districts and retired after over 30 years of dedication. Upon retiring she began teaching secondary education at Peninsula College.

Mary was an amazing mother, sister, partner, wife and friend. In 1980 she and her husband adopted a little bundle of joy, Jennifer. The stories Mary told about the day they found out they were able to bring a newborn home immediately were always entertaining to listen to. Little did she envision that that little crying bundle would one day give her another little bundle of love in the form of her only grandchild, Christian, who Mary absolutely loved, and he cherished every moment he got to be with her.

After retiring, Mary moved from Curlew to Spokane where she enjoyed retirement, but found she needed to keep busy, so she earned her AAS for Library Technician at the community college. She enjoyed her time assisting students with research assignments and enjoying the general peace of library work. Soon she reconnected with her high school sweetheart from Port Angeles, Jim Bailey, and eventually she moved back to the Port Angeles area. Mary taught at Peninsula College for a time before fully recommitting to retirement. She then took the time and developed her love of crafting and greatly enjoyed making new creations. She also loved Mary Engelbreit designs, and a favorite saying was "Let's put the fun back in dysfunctional".

Mary enjoyed traveling and went on several cruises over the years. When Jennifer moved to Texas, Mary would make the trip down there a couple times a year to explore new areas with Christian. Her and Jim once drove their travel trailer down and made a summer adventure out of the trip. Over the years they had many travel experiences that Mary lovingly scrapbooked and documented. In October of this year, Mary and her sister went to Pennsylvania to visit Jennifer and her family in their new home state. It was a great trip and she enjoyed seeing New England in the fall and visiting Hershey, PA.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Max) Stormo, grandson Christian Stormo, brothers Charles (Jan) Downen, Donald (Sandy) Downen, sister Bonnie (Dale) Murdock and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother Mildred Downen, father Rodney Downen and brother Rodney Downen Jr. as well as husbands Terry Bonwell and Jim Johnson.

Graveside Inurnment service will be held at a later date at Ocean View Cemetery in Port Angeles. In lieu of flowers, Mary has requested that donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.
