Robert William
Giese
Jun 18, 1925 — Aug 7, 2019
Port Angeles
Robert William Giese, "Bob," was born June 18, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. He passed peacefully on August 7, 2019, at the age of 94, in Port Angeles, at home, and in the company of his wife and two of his children.
Bob was born to William Kate (Billie) and Oscar Giese, the second child and brother to Armand Giese (predeceased). Bob's parents divorced two years after his birth and his mother took the boys to San Francisco, California, in order to get work.
She placed the boys in the Protestant Orphanage, which required at least one parent to be alive, and she visited the boys often.
Bob was at the orphanage until he finished high school, in 1942. At the age of 17, he entered the US Army Air Corps where he trained as a pilot flying B17's and B25's.
In 1951, Bob broke his leg and was in the hospital for surgery to correct it. While there, he met his future wife, Jane, his nurse, and they started dating. Bob and Jane married one year later and were together 67 years until his passing.
Bob and Jane were blessed with four children two boys and two girls now living in California, Washington and Hawaii, respectively. The are Elizabeth (Liz) Cooper, Jean Graham, William (Will/Dana) Giese and John (Jodean) Giese. He is survived by four grandchildren, Julia Peters, Gina Peters, Catherine Giese and Robert Giese (born on Bob's birthday).
Bob was accepted into UC Berkeley where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, he was hired as an engineer in the Contra Costa county Building Department, in Martinez, California. Bob continued there for 35 years- becoming head of the department. He was highly regarded by builders and contractors for his helps and fairness among them.
In 1990, Bob retired and he and Jane spent time motorhoming across the United States. They found property in Minnesota and decided to stay. Bob built a lovely lakefront home and they spent 17 years there until moving to Port Angeles, in 2010.
Providing for his family was important to Bob. He always made sure each child had a vehicle and would pick up a car from the junkyard and work with the boys to get it up to standard for driving while teaching them an important skill. Bob made sure each of them knew how to change a tire before handing over the keys.
One of Bob's favorite hobbies was flying; he rented and eventually co-owned two small aircraft, a Cessna and a Bonanza. Bob and Jane created many wonderful memories flying from place to place. He also enjoyed engineering things and designed and built many grand items, one being a sea-worthy motor boat used for fishing and daytime outings to various marinas.
Bob also loved dogs. The family hunted with Brittanys for several years, then later he and Jane discovered Border Collies and enjoyed watching them work with a sheep herder. And in the last few years, Bob enjoyed the love and affection from a Chihuahua mix, Ellie. If you wanted to make Bob smile, just give him a dog to pet; or a banana split, both made Bob smile!
He will be missed.
