Obituary

Sally was born and raised in Detroit, MI, the third daughter of Samuel Glass, an insurance agent, and Susan Smith Glass, a homemaker. At age 18, she married Dick Ford, then 19, also of Detroit, and moved to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for Dick's studies at Michigan Tech. After graduation in 1960, Sally and Dick loaded all their possessions, their newborn son Mike and a cocker spaniel puppy into their car and moved to Forks, WA, where Dick was to begin a job sight-unseen with the Forest Service. This was a huge life change for Sally the city girl, and she often recounted how, during the move, as they first drove through Sappho, she was greatly alarmed to think that that town was their destination, and how relieved she was to realize that they were actually settling in to the relatively grand and sophisticated town of Forks. Sally quickly immersed herself in small-town Northwest life, becoming one of the founding members of St. Swithins' Episcopal Church, having two more children (Diane in 1962, and Steve in 1965), hosting Cub Scout pack meetings, and making many dear friends.

In 1976, after briefly living in Marysville, the family moved back to the Olympic Peninsula, this time to stay. Sally served many years as a secretary in the Port Angeles public schools, first at PAHS and then, after her marriage to Richard Ruud in 1984, at Dry Creek Elementary. She and Richard were active members of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and the Dry Creek Grange, where they participated enthusiastically in square dancing events. They loved exploring the western US every summer in their RV with their dogs, visiting friends and relatives along the coast, and reserving special time every year for their favorite camping spot at Kalaloch.

Several years ago Sally began a long battle with declining health, which she endured with her characteristic optimism and quiet dignity, an inspiration to both friends and caregivers around her. After five years of residence at Dungeness Court in Sequim, she passed away peacefully on Wednesday, only a few hours after the death of Richard, her beloved husband of 37 years (see his obituary also on this website). Sally will be greatly missed, for her infectious laugh and quirky sense of humor, her unfailing patience and kindness to everyone, her fondness for dancing and music (her tastes ranged widely, from the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra to Ted Nugent and Eric Clapton), and her intense and loving devotion to her family, friends and church. She is survived by six children and stepchildren, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
