In 1999, Sandy was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of getting a bachelor's degree when she graduated from the University of St Francis after going to school while still working. She was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of living near the water when she moved to the Peninsula, and enjoyed watching all of the activity on the Strait. She became involved in her community, taking a writing class through the Port Angeles Senior Center, going on trips with the Port Angeles and Sequim Senior Centers, becoming a newsroom volunteer for KSQM, playing bridge with several different groups and singing with the Grand Olympics Chorus and the Community Christmas Choir.
