Steven Chester
Bury
Dec 10, 1954 — Aug 1, 2026
Sequim
Steven Chester Bury was born to Edna (Maziarz) and Chester Bury December 10, 1954, and grew up in Chicopee, MA. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He was an Aviation Structural Mechanic and served at the following stations: Mobile AL, Astoria OR, Port Angeles WA (twice), Sitka AK, and Clearwater FL. He also served on the ice breaker, The Polar Star; deployments took him to Central and South America, Oceania, Greenland, and Antarctica. Steve retired from the USCG as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service and moved back to Port Angeles before eventually settling in Sequim.
He worked in the maintenance division of Olympic National Park for a few years and then moved on to be the head of maintenance at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center for 13 years. He spent the last 8 years of his career back at the National Park Service until his final retirement in 2017.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, biking, paddling, fishing, and hunting. He was a jack of all trades: a skilled mechanic, builder, woodworker, and gardener. He built two of his homes, remodeled several others, and built a variety of wooden boats and furniture. Steve spent the years since retirement traveling across the US and Canada in a van he had retrofitted to his version of perfection. He was a man of few words but spoke through his actions - always fixing and upgrading things (sometimes even when it wasn't requested!), teaching by doing, and sparking a love of the outdoors in those around him.
Steve is survived by his ex-wife, Kay Stevens; his daughters, Dawn (Jered) Reynolds and Trisha Bury; his grandchildren, Mason Balch, Jayden Balch, and Warren Reynolds; and his great-granddaughter, Sienna Balch.
Drennan & Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles was entrusted with his arrangements. Please sign the online guestbook for his family at www.drennanford.com .
