Umporn
Ittikiatisak
Oct 25, 1936 — Jun 13, 2022
Port Angeles
Forever loved as a matriarch to both her family and friends, Umporn Ittikiatisak left the
physical world on June 13th, 2022 surrounded by her three children; Paul, Noi, and Joy
Itti. She passed from age-related causes unexpectedly at the age of 85.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, two sons, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; all of whom miss her fiercely.
Born on October 25, 1936 my grandmother was a force to be reckoned with. Her life
began in Chiang Mai, Thailand and has since taken root throughout the Pacific Northwest
from Washington all the way down to Central Oregon. Her presence continues to live on
in three more generations, from the food she taught us to cook, to the stories we continue
to tell.
As the sixth child out of 10, my grandmother's maternal compassion always came
naturally. For 10 years she led the government health clinic that served the village of
Toongseow, back when healthcare was not as easily accessible and villagers were rarely
able to visit the hospital. As the town's medic, she traveled all over Southeast Asia in
order to study more medical practices to implement once back at her local clinic. From
stitching cuts to birthing babies, my grandmother answered all the calls throughout the
night. My earliest memory of Thailand was riding on the back of her little red motorbike
as she made house calls even after retiring.
In 1982 my great aunt immigrated her entire family to the United States; my
grandmother, father, aunt, and uncle all included. My grandmother had since split her
time between Thailand and the United States, only recently residing more permanently in
Port Angeles, Washington after the start of the Covid pandemic. During her last trip to
Thailand in early 2020 after our wedding, we took my husband's family to make merit at
her hometown temple where all the monks still knew her by name, by Maepon (Mother).
My grandmother lived to walk in her granddaughter's wedding, watch another
granddaughter continue on to university, and witness her grandson raise two children of
his own. And while we all feel in our hearts that she left us too soon, it's our family's
outpouring of love that keeps her star shining bright in our lives.
At her prior request, we will privately release her on the Oregon Coast where our family can continue to visit.
Khun Ya, grandma.
